Deficiencia de folatos debida a diversas causas: a) aporte alimentario deficiente y/o alcoholismo, b) aumento en los requerimientos como en el embarazo, la lactancia, la primera infancia, c) defectos de la absorción intestinal: esprue, cortocircuito o síndrome de asa ciega, d) uso de medicamentos: metotrexato en artritis reumatoidea, anticonvulsivantes o anticonceptivos durante períodos prolongados, e) pacientes sometidos a nutrición parenteral total, f) pacientes con un estado patológico caracterizado por niveles elevados de renovación celular, g) psoriasis, y h) prevención de defectos de cierre del tubo neural en el feto.
